DESIGN RHYTHMS

The following are design rhythms that correlate to and emerge from my thesis. They are design considerations which are able to be visualized and realized into the Interbeing project, as the foundation and guide to its design.

STAGE AND PERFORMANCE

An inter-relational condition of engaging with the world, while also being a subject of engagement for the world.

CHOICE

Being presented with a choice between certain activities, paths of movement, and environments, one is reminded of the power our choices have to sculpt our experiences.

VARIETY

Variety creates choice, and is the result of multiple choices. It enriches our world, by showcasing the multiple faces and emotions of the world, deepening our understanding of the world.

BORDER INTERPLAY

When two people interact, their individual realities interplay, allowing new realities to emerge from that interplay. Architecturally, Interbeing allows for interplay across borders on multiples scales such as between indoor and outdoor, and across various neighborhoods, allowing for new experiences to arise in these spaces of interplay.

NATURAL ELEMENTS

DIRECT EXPERIENCE

Natural elements are abundantly incorporated into the architecture of Interbeing at various scales. They serve as direct sources of connection with the natural world we are a part of, strengthening our connection with the world.

Interbeing is founded on creating direct experience, where the person is intimately connected with the world they are engaging with. By allowing walking barefoot, touching surfaces, experiencing natural smells, listening to the surrounding orchestra of sounds, tasting multiple flavors, and seeing multiple environments, the person is left bare with the world, allowing for a more intimate connection to be nurtured.

This cloud is a composition of pieces from my project, extracted and repurposed into something new. The pieces seem to grow out of my workspace, symbolic of manifesting into reality from my imagination, at my workspace. They create a dreamlike spatial composition,

and serve as an exploration in our larger studio game space of similar compositions.

This detailed perspective of one of the main Northern clusters highlights the accessibility of the constructed spaces and their role as bridging pedestrians across different neighborhoods. It also showcases the spaces that can be taken up and used as pauses between circulation. There are multiple circulation options within this built cluster. The image also shows the coexistence of the natural and the constructed, and the occupation of different levels in the Interbeing landscape, as well the visibility across these levels.

STIRFLY

My Vellum project, STIRFLY, is a study of our inter-connected nature. Similar to human relationships, the two people first need to collaborate heavily in order to sit together on STIRFLY. Once they are on it, each person’s weight pulls on the other, creating a dynamic dance, where one person goes down, pulling the other person up, then the other person goes down, pulling the first person up. This resembles the cyclical waves of two people in a relationship in time and space.

Northeastern Neighborhood

This space unites the indoor and outdoor experience, creating a continuously engaging environment. Constructed and natural elements are harmoniously coexisting. People are engaged in their environment and with one another. It is a slow meandering space where mass elements frame usable space, allowing seating.
